Design Firm: Synthesis design

This classic family home underwent a complete revitalization, blending modern functionality with its original charm. Untouched since its purchase, our team worked with Synthesis Design to completely reimagine the home’s outdated layout, creating new space and functionality.

The kitchen was a cramped and fragmented space, awkwardly divided by angled walls. Removing these walls created a seamless flow throughout the home and centered the kitchen as a gathering point for the family.

Functionality for the family was the guiding principle of the kitchen redesign: ample counter space, efficient work areas, and generous storage were essential.

Because of this client’s particular work-from-home needs, an innovative solution was needed. Seamlessly blended into the kitchen design, our team integrated a motorized stand-up desk.

A striking custom-designed hood fan—detailed with shiplap accents against contrasting stained millwork—now stands as the kitchen’s centerpiece.

The renovation embraced warm materials, wood stains, and wall paneling to maintain the home’s original charm while introducing contemporary elements.

Although asbestos removal and structural seismic upgrades were required due to the age of the home, much of the original structure and framing was retained, minimizing landfill waste and preserving the home’s heritage.

Significant energy upgrades included:

  • Installing new windows
  • Enhancing insulation in the attic and exterior walls
  • A high-efficiency furnace with a heat pump

These changes not only improve the home’s environmental footprint but also its comfort and livability.

The outdoor living space received a complete overhaul to accommodate the clients’ love for relaxation and BBQs. The aging deck was rebuilt, complemented by a new covered area and roof extension for year-round enjoyment.

Underneath, a new dry-parking area was created for their cars. Including a heated driveway for added safety on icy winter days.

To support the family’s active lifestyle, a cleverly designed storage room under the stairs was built to provide ample space for all of their outdoor activity equipment.

The front of the home was redesigned with both curb appeal and practicality in mind, ensuring a welcoming entrance regardless of the weather while giving the home a fresh and appealing look.
